Antony Visocchi, Independent Dental Expert Witness
Mr. Visocchi is passionate believer in a non-prejudiced approach to life. This allows the ability to assess all situations with fairness and consideration yet total objectivity. Having considerable life experience as well as clinical experience, he has a deep sense of even-handedness and reason.
Mr. Visocchi believes in diligence, integrity and honesty and always gives professional responsibilities the necessary time and commitment.
It is also appreciated that bringing a legal action is a significant event in the lives of the patient and practitioner and therefore needs to be treated with respect, understanding and care.
During the extensive experience of general dental practice gained since 1997, Mr. Visocchi has always worked very hard to ensure that his clinical practice has been patient centred with the patients’ needs, well-being and comfort put far and away above any other consideration. This philosophy has, therefore, cultured a passion that professional colleagues have the same ideals in order to protect both patients and the reputation of the profession. Likewise, it is also important that the profession is protected from claims that are unjust or unfounded.
Working in a busy general dental practice, Mr. Visocchi can acutely understand the issues and pressures that professional colleagues face on a daily basis. Therefore, a level of empathy and understanding can be imparted to the majority of situations that face dentists and patients thus allowing a practical, fair and reasonable approach when assessing a range of medico-legal issues.
Details on Practicing Life
On qualification in 1996, I was appointed Junior House Officer post at Glasgow Dental Hospital & School. Six months was spent in the Oral Surgery and six months in Conservation departments.
1997 was spent in a practice in Aberdeen to complete the Certificate in Vocational Training. A full-time associate’s job in another practice in Aberdeen followed. Being fortunate enough to work with an excellent principal, both clinically and ethically, I learned how to run a practice by treating patients as he would like to be treated.
In October 2003, I opened a squat practice in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. A suitable site was found and the work began on a 6-month project to convert and extend a residential property into a 3-surgery practice.
The practice was awarded BDA Good Practice Scheme Membership in December 2004. In December 2014, practice was awarded Gold Membership after 10 years on the scheme.
In 2011, consolidation and augmentation of my knowledge was gained by passing the postgraduate diplomas of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of The Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF RCS Eng) and Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MFDS RCS Ed).
In July 2014, I was appointed as a clinical expert to the General Dental Council Fitness to Practice team. A clinical expert provides clinical for the GDC’s Fitness to Practice process. Reports are produced which help the GDC decided whether the information referred to the Fitness to Practice team amounts to an allegation that the registrant’s fitness to practice may be impaired.
As I expand this work, I have now worked with dental defence organisations and medical negligence solicitors as an independent dental expert witness.
In May 2016, I was awarded Cardiff University Bond Solon Civil Expert Witness Certificate. This involved formal training and assessment over 2 years in reports writing, courtroom skills, cross examination, civil law & procedures. I am also familiar with the Jackson Reforms and fully aware of Civil Procedure Rules, particularly Practice Direction Part 35.
In Octover 2016, I was appointed Dental Practice Inspector for NHS Forth Valley.
In August 2017, I was invited to join the panel of Expert Advisers for the National Institute of Health & Care Excellence (NICE) Centre for Guidelines.
In 2018, I was accepted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FDS RCPS Glas). I am also now an examiner for the RCPS Glasgow for the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, parts 1 & 2.
As of December 2018, I have taken up a role as Clinical Lecturer at the Aberdeen Dental Institute. A Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Law (PG Cert Med Law) was gained in August 2018 as part of a three year LLM in Medical Law & Ethics. In February 2020, I was accepted as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
